Wind blows man up tree

A Chinese man had to be rescued by firefighters after he was reportedly blown onto a tree by a strong gust of wind. The man, 20, was trying to repair the roof of his home in Beijing's Shijingshan district when the wind caught him.

According to the Beijing Morning Post, he was trying to repair loose slates when a strong gust blew him off the rooftop. "Luckily I was blown onto a nearby tree, otherwise who knows where I would be," the man reportedly told rescuers.

For a while he was left clinging to the 45ft tree with both arms, legs dangling in the air: "I was terrified and kept shouting for help," he said.

But passers-by called firefighters who arrived within minutes and bound two ladders together to reach the man. He was brought back to earth safely, ending his 20 minute ordeal.

Police train to climb 3ft ladder

Police officers have been sent on a courses to learn how to climb a 3ft ladder to put up anti-speeding devices.

Forty-five staff at Lancashire Police had to complete a two-hour seminar before they were allowed to install roadside speeding signs. The class included guidance on how to use a ladder safely.

The devices - smiley-face speed indicator signs (Spids) - were being put up freely by staff before health and safety officers from the local council told the force that they were breaching regulations. Some staff were banned from even moving existing signs until they had attended the seminar. Several of the £3,500 devices were left dormant for up to four months as a result.

A police statement, which was issued as part of a Freedom of Information request, said: "It would appear that, although working at less than one metre above ground level, staff should have been on a ladder training course. "It is fair to say that risks associated with deployment of a Spid sign have not changed, but the risks associated with working at height were not fully appreciated initially."

Ben Wallace, the MP for Lancaster and Wyre, said: "It's another example of the tail wagging the dog, of bureaucracy gone mad. It beggars belief that bureaucracy stands in the way of common sense, even when it concerns our police force."

Blood from mosquito traps Finnish suspect

Police in Finland believe they have caught a car-thief thanks to a DNA sample taken from a sample of his blood found inside a mosquito. Last June a car was stolen in Lapua, some 380 kilometres (235 miles) north of Helsinki. It was soon found near a railway station in Seinaejoki, about 25 kilometres from where it was stolen.

"A police patrol carried out an inspection of the car and they noticed a mosquito that had sucked blood. It was sent to the laboratory for testing, which showed the blood belonged to a man who was in the police registers," inspector Sakari Palomaeki said.

The suspect, who has been interrogated, has insisted he did not steal the car, saying he had hitchhiked and was given a lift by a man driving the car. Palomaeki said a prosecutor would decide if the evidence was solid enough for charges to be pressed.

Finnish police said it was rare for them to use insects to solve crimes, although they are interested in everything found at a crime scene. "It is not usual to use mosquitoes. In training we were not told to keep an eye on mosquitoes at crime scenes," Palomaeki said, laughing. "It is not easy to find a small mosquito in a car, this just shows how thorough the crime scene investigation was," he added.

Health Department falls victim to food poisoning at office party

Some health department workers in southern Illinois think they may have discovered some contaminated food - at their own office Christmas gathering. After the Lawrence County Health Department had a buffet for 72 people at a restaurant last week, 42 of the attendees suffered stomach problems, including the head of the department, Phyllis Wells.

"I'm telling you, it got me down. I about passed out and everything else," Wells said yesterday. "It's not been funny. It's taken the punch out of my whole Christmas."

Wells says the cause of the outbreak hasn't been pinpointed. But she suspects the culprit was a norovirus - something people get from contact with those infected, ingesting contaminated food or drink, or by touching contaminated items and then their mouths. For now, Wells says the common denominator appears to be cold diced ham served in the salad bar.

"It may be that just a food handler was sick at the time and handled some of the food they prepped for the meal," she said. "Or maybe it was somebody who was sick who came to it and touched the handle and contaminated it."

Christmas Eating Tips

HOLIDAY EATING TIPSlaughing

  1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit . In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door where they’re serving rum balls.
  2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. It’s rare. You cannot find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It’s not as if you’re going to turn into an eggnog-alcoholic or something. It’s a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It’s later than you think. It’s Christmas !
  3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That’s the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.
  4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they’re made with skim milk or whole milk. If it’s skim, pass. Why bother? It’s like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.
  5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people’s food for free. Lots of it. Hello?
  6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year’s. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do This is the time for long naps, which you’ll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.
  7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don’t budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They’re like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you’re never going to see them again.
  8. Same for pies - Apple , Pumpkin, Mincemeat . Have a slice of each. Or if you don’t like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day ?
  9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it’s loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards.
  10. One final tip: If you don’t feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven’t been paying attention Re-read tips; start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner. Remember this motto to live by:
“Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming “WOO HOO what a ride!”

Mother dies after drinking four litres of water in two hours

Jacqueline Henson, 40, was determined to slim from 14 stone and was "over the moon" at shedding over 11 pounds in the first week of using the LighterLife diet. But after drinking four litres of water in less than two hours, the mother-of-five collapsed in the bathroom of the home she shared with husband Brian, 40.

Attempts to revive Mrs Henson, of Huddersfield, West Yorks, failed and she was pronounced dead the next day. A post mortem found she died from swelling to the brain.

The inquest heard that the liquid-based diet is aimed at people three or more stone overweight, and involves consuming four litres of water a day. LighterLife's plan advises consuming just 500 calories a day for a 12-week period - just a quarter of a woman's normal intake. It has been linked with water poisoning, hair loss and disrupted periods.

Mr Henson told the inquest that his wife came home at 5pm on November 14 and drank two large bottles of water before consuming more from a pint glass while watching television.

He said: "At 11pm she stood up and said her stomach was solid. She was walking across the room and was sick. At 11.15pm she said she had a headache and went upstairs to the toilet. My 18-year-old daughter Chantelle went upstairs and I heard her saying 'mum, mum'. I knew something was wrong. Her eyes were closed and she didn't appear to be breathing."

Joanne Neville, from LighterLife, said the company recommended drinking four litres of water a day, and the target weight loss was three stone in 14 weeks. She said the firm "clearly" reinforced the message that participants should drink the water in small amounts at a time. Mrs Henson was given the all-clear to begin the diet after visiting her GP for a check-up, the inquest heard.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, West Yorkshire Coroner Roger Whittaker said: "No-one should drink water in the quantity that Mrs Henson did over that short a period. Little and often."
