A USAF C-17 "Globemaster" releases flares in order to thwart anti-air ordinance attacks. These are typically released only one or two at a time, but when released all at once, the residual smoke paired with aerodynamic air disturbance creates a neat little trail know as a "smoke angel". Enjoy.
