somewhat unknown gem of a movie...
borrowed this movie off a friend and watched it over the weekend and was just blown away...how is it that it didn't get the acclaim that it deserved? andrew niccol's LORD OF WAR starring nicolas cage, jared leto and ethan hawke is pretty damned scintillating...
the lethal business of arms dealers provides an electrifying context for the black-as-coal humor of this movie...chronicling the rise and inevitable fall of Yuri Orlov (Cage), a Ukrainian immigrant to America who makes his fortune selling every kind of ordnance he can get his amoral hands on...
the main character Yuri traffics in death the way other salesman might push vacuum cleaners (he likes to say that alcohol and tobacco are deadlier products)...but the possible initial dislike of this character is offset by the insanely dark humor that this movie needed to have...to understand this monster named Yuri, we have to see at least a glimpse of his humanity, which Cage provides as only he can with his deadpan demeanour...
remember RAISING ARIZONA and the diaper scene in the convenience store? or LEAVING LAS VEGAS? or BRINGING OUT THE DEAD? Cage was the only person i could think of who could pull off a convincing Yuri...
sit thru this movie and you get a heavy dose of good-humored anti-war subtleties, with a highly entertaining movie thrown in for good measure...i'd highly recommend it...a true hidden gem
