as an armchair golf afficionado, JOHN BYRON NELSON Jr was one of my many idols...he ranked up there amongst the top 6 best ever golfers along with the golden bear, arnie palmer, sam snead, ben hogan and tiger...truly august company...
he passed on at the age of 94 overnight and the whole golfing world (and many beyond) mourns the passing of an icon...
his many golfing records have been eclipsed over the years but one stand-out performance in 1945 will probably NEVER be broken nor even threathened...in that year, he won 18 tournaments including 11 on the trot...yes, 11...even the great arnie and tiger only did 6 in a row at best...and in this day and age, it would be unthinkable for anyone (even tiger) to approach that level of greatness...
RIP mr nelson...you were first and foremost a gentleman golfer...you will be missed...
