kona@themovies - THE DEPARTED
caught THE DEPARTED last night at GV grand....first impressions were that this scorcese-directed version is that it's not as stylish as the honky movie INFERNAL AFFAIRS upon which it was based...perhaps a little more gritty...but scorcese's pacing of the movie was nigh on perfect...it sure didn't feel like 150 mins at all...the weaving of the story thru the darker side of boston was intricate and the plot twists were masterfully contrived...
am not going into plot details as i do not want to spoil it for those who have not watched...
overall an excellent movie well worth the money...the only problem i had with it was the rather rushed ending which left some questions unanswered...it feels as though and looks very likely that the original cut of the movie was a fair bit longer and several scenes which would have contributed to a "cleaner" ending had been edited out for the final screen product...i'd have to say i would definitely be on the lookout for the director's cut of this on DVD...
leo and matt put on commendable performances as the conflicted duo, with both of them putting in pretty much their most matured and exemplary performances on screen to date...especially leo, whose many collaborations with scorcese (almost like being the director's "muse") have resulted in him putting in better and better performances as his career evolves...
but inevitably, they were put into shade by that leery ole bugger nicholson...he was bloody good as the irish mob boss, owning every scene he's in with his portrayal, providing a paradoxical attraction to his menacing character...in doing so, he creates another classic role to add to his already sterling resume...
but the best lines in the show are reserved for mark wahlberg...absolutely hilarious comeback lines laced with familiar profanity...that alone was worthy of the ticket fee
overall a 8 outta 10 (would have been 9 if the questions were answered for a more complete ending)...a definite recommended!
so is this scorcese's finest work? maybe.....but i'd have to have another viewing of GOODFELLAS as a comparison...
