a leap of faith...
watched this movie over the weekend...produced local by mediacorp raintree pictures and based on a novella written by singapore literary doyen catherine lim, it's a laudable production piece...
release blurb reads as - "In The Leap Years, a Singaporean girl (Li Ann) unexpectedly meets her dream man (Jeremy) on February 29, on the day that she turns 6 years old (24 in real years). Unfortunately, Jeremy has to leave Singapore on that very day that they meet! So they make a promise to meet every four years, same place, same time. Can both Li Ann & Jeremy keep their promise?"
i know it sounds a bit far-fetched and more than a little bit silly, but the premises has its appeal to the die-hard romantics in us...
problem i have with the show is the utter lack of chemistry between the leading pair...none whatsoever...it's like watching 2 strangers fumble in the dark looking for each other...somehow i never did get a sense that they were "made for each other", so to speak...
and the fact that they go every 4 years without any contact? what the heck, in this day and age with the internet, widespread telephony and cheap air travel....can't they get each other's contact details to stay in touch??? how does li ann become so indulgent in the "relationship" that she willing waits and pines for jeremy all those years?
one really has to suspend disbelief and just wallow in the movie to not think of these obvious questions...
as a fairytale, it works....as a tale for the modern ages, arguably, it fails...cliched as hell...
still a watchable movie tho...perfect for the dating couples...
yeah yeah i'm a cynic...
