day 7

...was spent in hakodate itself and in the evening flying back to tokyo...

  1. fresh fresh seafood...at a price
  2. yubari melons cost a bomb...they're really sweet though...
  3. get a load of that grandmother of all crabs!
  4. uni (sea urchin roe) straight from the shell...it was awesome!
  5. fresh squid sashimi - they were swimming around in a pool, pulled out and sliced/diced right in front of us...in fact the tentacles were still wriggling around as they slid down my throat...freaky!
  6. on the grounds of the goryukaku (the 1st western-style fortress complex in japan)
  7. floral clock
  8. a walk after lunch around the old hakodate ward...this is now a posh residential area with many old and beautiful buildings...
  9. ...such as this russian orthodox church
  10. another church
  11. beautiful array of fall colours
  12. the hakodate meijikan (old postal hall) is "encased" with creeper type leaves...it's now converted into a shopping centre
  13. coloured shot glasses
  14. redbrick warehouse shopping area...original godowns for cargo and now also converted for shopping/leisure use
  15. resting after too much walking
  16. our last meal in hokkaido was a rather tasty tonkatsu teishoku at the hakodate airport
