...was a proud day for spanish sports afficionados....why you may ask?
firstly fernando alonso extended his winning streak with RENAULT and ran off with the british grand prix of 2006 at silverstone...he qualified on pole and after a couple of laps of the race, was never seriously threatened again...romping to a 13 second win over 2nd placed michael schumacher...he displayed a level of racing ability, calm, composure and poise way beyond his age...
secondly, rafael nadal defended his french open tennis title successfully in paris, subduing the world number 1 roger federer in 4 sets...his bludgeoning topspin forehands overpowering the backhand of federer and he simply does not have any nerves...he did not falter (although he did come out of the blocks really slowly...losing the first set 1-6...shocker) and he did it in absolute style...
watch out world, the spanish are coming!!! let's see if their perennially-underacheiving football team can emulate their countrymen above...
